Imagine showing Isaac Asimov or Frank Herbert an order from the president to protect the thinking machines:

Here's the post from Trump:

You get what he's saying: It's an arms race. If China, Iran, Russia, and others are going to build A.I., then the United States needs to have it too ... and win the race to get it.

Never mind that this is the exact scenario that leads to varying levels of A.I. apocalypse, from Person of Interest, to Blade Runner to Mission Impossible: Final Reckoning, to The Matrix, to Terminator, to The Mitchells vs. The Machines to 2001: A Space Odyssey, to the galactic-level robot wars of the Dune, Foundation, or Mass Effect universes.

People had a WHOLE BUNCH OF THOUGHTS, from our energy capacity (thanks to the climate wackos gutting the national grid) to state's rights to the end of mankind.

It remains to be seen how Trump can mandate this without Congress making it law (specifically through the Supremacy Clause of Article VI of the Constitution), but we live in a time when a random judge can stop the president from doing anything, so I think we're at the phase of societal collapse where everyone does what's right in his own eyes.

But hey, no one will care about the fall of the Republic after the machines have plugged us into the Matrix! 😉
