Californians are crossing the border to Mexico to fill up on cheap gas

Yo, all my San Diego peeps, I have great news:

Sick of paying nearly $6 for a gallon of gas?

Just head on down to Tijuana, where prices are nearly $2 cheaper per gallon.

The trip will pay for itself!

A dozen miles south [of Chula Vista], just across the U.S.-Mexico border in Tijuana, regular gas sells for an average of $3.96 a gallon — nearly $2 less than in California.

Yup, Tijuana isn't just a stop for cheap pharmaceuticals anymore. Californians are literally driving there to fill up their tanks.

These are strange times we live in.

Patricia Saharagui, a spokesperson for the Rendichicas gas station chain, estimated that its locations near the border have seen a 6% increase in sales in the month since the war began. She welcomed Californians...

At one Rendichicas station, about half the cars that pulled in had California license plates. Unlike California stations, where people pump their own gas, Mexican ones are full-service.

Full service?!?!

Now those were the good ol' days!

Forget the price, I'm headed to Mexico for the experience!

But just why is gas so cheap in Mexico?

As the war in Ukraine triggered a run-up in world oil prices, [President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's] administration vowed to keep prices under control by providing subsidies to Mexican oil companies and refineries.

Got it.

That's cool that their president cares about oil and gas!

(Of course the corruption of state-owned Mexican oil is pretty bad...)

And check this out, it looks like you San Diego peeps will soon be able to double dip on government subsidies.

In California, Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday released details of a proposal to pay vehicle owners $400 for each car or truck they have registered in the state. The plan, which would cost $11 billion, also includes grants to offer free or reduced public transit.

Ready, set, game the system!
