Good Samaritan rescues newborn after witnessing homeless mother throw baby in garbage can

A man living in Honolulu is being praised as a Good Samaritan after he rescued a baby abandoned in his neighborhood last week.

The man, who has asked to remain anonymous, heard a woman screaming outside his home shortly before midnight on Saturday and to his horror looked out his window to see a homeless woman giving birth. He immediately called 911, but then as he watched from the window, he saw the woman cross the street and toss her newborn baby into a trash can.

At that point, he ran outside to help the child.

The man told KHON2 what happened next, saying,

I was able to just grab it out of the top of the trash and it didn't look like it was really injured or anything. It was crying when I took it out of the dumpster, which is a good sign.

He held the baby as he waited for the ambulance to arrive, saying that,

I broke down a little bit and started crying because I didn't know how someone could just leave their kid like that.

The witness said that the scene felt like a nightmare and he is still in shock from what he saw.

The baby was taken to the hospital and is reportedly in stable condition.

The Good Samaritan went on to say,

I'm grateful to God that I was here home when this all happened so that I was able to get the kid in time to save its life. It could have turned out very different if I didn't hear the screams and I wasn't home.

The mother has not been located, but a child abandonment case has been opened. Hawaii passed a Safe Haven law in 2007 that would have allowed the mother to legally and safely surrender her baby at a hospital, police station, or fire station.
