Pope Francis calls for universal ban on surrogacy, calls it "deplorable" and "a grave violation of the dignity of the woman and the child"

In a foreign policy address to ambassadors accredited to the Holy See on Monday, Pope Francis called for a universal ban on what he deemed the "despicable" (or "deplorable") practice of surrogate motherhood.

Glad he's finally catching up to The Babylon Bee!

In his annual speech highlighting threats to global peace and human dignity, the pope specifically criticized the "commercialization" of pregnancy.

Could this be a rare win for this pope?

Expressing his concern about the current state of affairs, Francis conveyed regret that 2024 coincided with a period when peace is "increasingly threatened, weakened, and in some part lost."

The pope listed many ills humanity is facing, including the wars in Ukraine and Israel, the "immoral" production of nuclear and conventional weapons, migration, and climate change (because, of course, he had to sneak that in there).

This list of threats to peace and human dignity also included surrogacy, stating the life of the unborn child must be protected and not "suppressed or turned into an object of trafficking."

Pope Francis says children are a gift and "never the basis of a commercial contract," as he called for a worldwide ban on surrogacy "to prohibit this practice universally."

I consider despicable the practice of so-called surrogate motherhood, which represents a grave violation of the dignity of the woman and the child, based on the exploitation of situations of the mother's material needs.

The pope has expressed his opposition to surrogacy in the past, calling it a "uterus for rent," but he's also stated that same-sex couples who use a surrogate can, in fact, have their child baptized.

Someone needs to pick a lane...
