Rescue crews have confirmed the first death in a Miami-area residential building that collapsed early Thursday morning, with bystanders reporting screams and cries for help coming from the rubble. At least 9 others have been taken to the hospital.

The expensive ocean-view Champlain Towers building was constructed in 1981. Most of the building was reportedly occupied. Dozens of one- and two-bedroom units were involved in the collapse.

Actor Jamal Akakpo was staying in a hotel across the street and shared several videos in the minutes following the incident:

A few hours after hundreds of first responders arrived at the scene, the first survivor was pulled out of the rubble:

One building resident (who was thankfully out of town) shared security cam footage of the moment her condo collapsed:

City skycam footage and a camera several blocks away also captured the moment the building fell:

Officials confirmed in a press briefing at 9 a.m. EST that the building had 136 units and that roughly half were involved in the collapse. They also said that 35 people were evacuated from the uncollapsed portion of the building and that two have been pulled from the rubble so far.
