A sitting member of Congress actually seems to think that if you don't pay for her children's pre-K, she should be able to kill them

Hard to draw any other reasonable conclusion from this:

The argument, of course, is that Republicans and pro-lifers are hypocrites if they oppose abortion while not supporting left-wing policies like free "childcare," "paid leave" or "healthcare."

Conversely, the message is that, so long as a woman does not have access to those things, she is justified in killing her preborn children if she deems it necessary.

Not sure if that's going to win over many hearts and minds.

This argument actually comes up a lot, so it's worth pointing out just how profoundly silly it is on a technical level. Government-sponsored childcare, paid leave, healthcare—these are all policy questions, which is to say they are matters chiefly concerned with policy.

You can argue that it's a good idea to offer everyone in the United States universal healthcare and taxpayer-sponsored daycare—that it will improve outcomes for everyone, that it's cost-efficient, and so forth—but you're going to have to marshal a good deal of data, evidence and facts to support that contention.

Meanwhile, the people who disagree with you can and will do the same, and will argue there are better ways to achieve desirable and successful societal outcomes without such political measures. Both sides will hash it out on those merits. And that's that.

Abortion, on the other hand, is strictly a moral issue. Pro-lifers contend (correctly) that it is wrong to kill innocent human beings, including preborn ones. Pro-abortionists believe it is perfectly okay to kill some innocent human beings, specifically preborn ones.

You cannot debate this issue as a matter of policy; it is entirely a moral problem. It's not a matter of outcomes, cost-benefit analyses, budget charts, or any other things traditionally associated with policy. The question isn't whether or not there's a better, more efficient, less expensive way to kill an innocent human being; it's rather that killing an innocent human being is always wrong on the merits.

So, in summary, it's perfectly okay for pro-lifers to take a strong moral stance against abortion while disagreeing with Democrats about the efficacy of government-sponsored childcare, healthcare and other social programs. It's fine. You can do both.

Congratulations: After reading this, you are starting your Wednesday significantly more informed than a sitting congresswoman!
