A Washington state school district is scrapping music classes because they promote — I'm not kidding — "white supremacy"

Yo, people, I got a white supremacy update for you.

Music — yes, that beautiful sound we know so well — is now a product of white supremacy.

Yup, according to the Olympia School District in Washington we can no longer have music classes because somehow they promote white supremacy.

What a world we live in, folks.

What a world.

A Washington school district is planning to cut music classes it believes promote "white supremacy culture" and "significant institutional violence."

The Olympia School District — which is facing a budget shortfall of $11.5 million — voted last week to eliminate band and strings for fourth-graders in an effort to both save money and fight racism.

Wow, this is already the dumbest thing I've read all year.

Sorry, there's more.

School Board Director Scott Clifthorne admitted during the meeting that research proves music classes are "healthy for young minds," but that they are disproportionately rolled out across the district's 12 elementary schools.

Students at some campuses are required to miss "core instruction" in order to attend music classes, he said, while some campuses offer longer instrumental class time than others.

"We also know that there are other folks in the community that experience things like a tradition of excellence as exclusionary," Clifthorne said.

So because music classes aren't exactly identical across the school district then the art of music itself is white supremacist?!?!

WHAT??

That makes zero sense.

Honestly, I'm pretty sure this district is simply in a budget crunch, and they just need an excuse to drop some of their classes.

Hey, why not blame white supremacy? That'll take the spotlight off of our financial incompetence!

Here's more from the school board director:

"We're a school district that lives and is entrenched, and is surrounded by white supremacy culture. And that is a real thing. There's nothing about string, or wind instrumental music that is intrinsically white supremacist. However, the ways in which it is, and the ways in which all of our institutions, not just schools but local government, state government, our churches, and our neighborhoods allow white supremacy to be propagated, and cause significant institutional violence are things that we have to think about here. I think we have to do that interrogation and address the ways in which it creates challenges for the educational day for our elementary learners."

There's nothing intrinsically white supremacist about music, it's just that everything around us is white supremacist, so music must be too.

Got it.

I got a great idea, Olympia School District: Since everything around us is white supremacist why don't you just go ahead and get rid of the school district as a whole, huh?

I think that would definitely solve the problem of white supremacy on the progressive-as-can-be Olympic Peninsula.

Oh, and maybe get rid of that little state college on the edge of town while you're at it.

I'm sorry people, but this story is too dumb to take seriously.

I'm over it.
