Abortion remained the leading cause of death worldwide in 2023. Here are the stats.

For at least the fifth consecutive year, abortion was the leading cause of death worldwide in 2023.

Statistics compiled by Worldometer, which were derived from World Health Organization data, show that more than 44 million babies were killed in the womb, more than several of the next leading causes of death combined.

While the broad definition of "abortion" from pro-choicers can include miscarriages, that is not what is being measured here. Those 44 million were purposefully induced abortions.

Abortion as a term most commonly - and in the statistics presented here - refers to the induced abortion of a human pregnancy, while spontaneous abortions are usually termed miscarriages.

According to the statistics listed on the site, 60.6 million people died in 2023, but that does NOT include abortions which, if included, would bring the total to over 100 million. This means nearly 40% of ALL people who died last year were murdered in the womb.

Despite some states in the US restricting abortion post-Roe, it has hardly made a dent in the worldwide abortion totals.

While the number of abortions that took place in 2020 and 2019 — about 42.6 million and 42.4 million respectively — were slightly lower than the number of pregnancies terminated in subsequent years, abortion was still the leading cause of death in both years.

The number of abortions performed in 2023 remained relatively unchanged from 2022, even though last year constituted the first full year since the U.S. Supreme Court determined in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization that the U.S. Constitution doesn't contain a right to abortion. The Dobbs decision led to the passage of laws in several states that either severely restricted or almost entirely banned the procedure.

While physician-assisted abortion is illegal in several states, self-managed abortion via pills is not outlawed anywhere in the United States, which helps explain why the total number of abortions has hardly been touched since Dobbs.

I'll just leave you with this observation that is directly related to the billion or more humans who have been aborted in less than a century. 👇
