Apple says a new iPhone app will allow users to replicate their own voices in just 15 minutes

This is all happening really, really fast, isn't it? It feels like it's really fast.

Amid a new wave of artificial intelligence, Apple iPhones will soon be able to speak in their users' voices, the tech company announced on Tuesday.

The new iPhone feature, Personal Voice, will give users randomized text prompts to generate 15 minutes of audio. Another feature, Live Speech, will allow users to save commonly used phrases for the device to speak during phone calls and in-person conversations.

Your iPhone will reportedly use "machine learning" to generate the voices, which will be stored on the device itself rather than in a cloud.

Which is a good move, because, as one cybersecurity expert put it: "What if your voice can be stolen by your phone to be used by others?"

We've actually already seen this play out, just last month:

It seems inevitable that this is going to become more common, that many people will be scammed by this voice technology, and that it will be used for nefarious ends quite often.

That doesn't mean it's necessarily bad technology. But we shouldn't be naive about the world that this massive leap forward in personal tech will usher in.

"Personal Voice" is expected to be released by the end of the year.
