You know how the Americas were filled with peace and harmony and everything was perfect before Columbus arrived?

Well, we've just found a new site where the "mostly peaceful" natives conducted their ancient and tranquil ritual of ... mass child sacrifice.

Well, surely there's something we can learn from these ancient native cultures about how we should structure a harmonious and peaceful society, right?

An altar from the Teotihuacan culture, at the pre-Hispanic heart of what became Mexico, was discovered in Tikal National Park in Guatemala, the center of Mayan culture, demonstrating the interaction between the two societies, Guatemala's Culture and Sports Ministry announced this week.

The enormous city-state of Tikal, whose towering temples still stand in the jungle, battled for centuries with the Kaanul dynasty for dominance of the Maya world ...

Oh, cool. An altar. Where they sacrificed goats, or llamas, or whatever animals were around in Central America at the time, right?

Lorena Paiz, the archaeologist who led the discovery, said that the Teotihuacan altar was believed to have been used for sacrifices, 'especially of children.'

But don't worry, they weren't as bad as it sounds. The child murdering sacrifices were mostly peaceful.

María Belén Méndez, an archaeologist who was not involved with the project, said the discovery confirms 'that there has been an interconnection between both cultures and what their relationships with their gods and celestial bodies was like.'

'We see how the issue of sacrifice exists in both cultures. It was a practice; it's not that they were violent, it was their way of connecting with the celestial bodies,' she said.

I'm sorry, WHAT?

Am I reading this wrong?

Child sacrifice wasn't violent because it was just a way to connect to the sun, moon, and stars? Is that what this "expert" is telling us here?

I'm sorry, any society that takes kids onto a temple altar and kills them to get closer to the sun gods or whatever horoscopic deity is not what I would call "non-violent."

I am so glad we've moved on from this in our day!
