Cyprus refuses to convict British man of murder after smothering ill wife with pillow because she apparently wanted to die

Well, that's one way to know that there is zero difference between murder and assisted suicide.

A British man, David Hunter, smothered his terminally ill wife Janice with a pillow back in December 2021 at their home in Cyprus. But judges in Cyprus last week found that the man didn't murder his wife, but ruled him guilty of the lesser crime of manslaughter because he and his wife conspired in the death.

The one and only Daniel Payne covered this story for the Catholic News Agency:

The defendant's law firm, Justice Abroad — a U.K.-based concern that offers legal services to British citizens in other countries — said in a press release announcing the verdict that the court "agreed with the defense position that this was not a case of premeditated murder," given that Hunter "had acted spontaneously to end the life of his wife of over 50 years, upon her begging him to do so because of the pain she was under."

Janice was in tremendous pain as a result of her cancer and, according to the defense, was begging for death. So her husband murdered her.

I'm sorry, legally, he just killed her.

Assisted suicide is still illegal in Cyprus (and in England); however, this case demonstrates that the law is definitely willing to look the other way when a murder case such as this comes before the court.

Another significant step down the slippery slope toward the culture of death...
