We've all seen those heartbreaking stories on GoFundMe of sick children in need of funds for medical care; and where there's money, there are sure to be scam artists.
But an Australian influencer scammer (authorities have withheld her name) was arrested for being a particular kind of evil.
She is being charged with poisoning her one-year-old daughter in order to document her journey through her daughter's "terminal illness" to boost her followers and raise money on GoFundMe.
Doctors had raised the alarm in October, when the baby was admitted to hospital suffering a serious medical episode ...
'[There are] no words for how repulsive offences of this nature are,' Queensland Police Det Insp Paul Dalton told reporters on Thursday.
'There is no excuse for hurting a child, particularly one so young.'
Between August and October, detectives say that the woman - from the Sunshine Coast region - gave the child several prescription and pharmacy medicines, without approval.
She went to great lengths to obtain the unauthorised medications and cover up her behaviour.
The GoFundMe she set up raised around $60,000 AUS ($37,300 US), and the site is in the process of refunding those donations.
After months of investigation, the 34-year-old woman was charged with torture, administering poison, making child exploitation material and fraud.
The sick child and her sibling are currently safe, and the woman is awaiting trial.
