Based Christian school assignment: Lovingly persuade gay friends that their lifestyle is sinful and God's design for them is good

Christian Academy of Louisville seems to be an extremely Bible-based and red-pilled institution, and I'm all here for it.

Middle-schoolers in a BIble elective class at CAL were assigned to write a letter to an imaginary friend on Thursday "who is struggling with homosexuality":

"Assume that you have known this friend since kindergarten, that you go to the same church and that you have been pretty good friends over the years until now," the essay prompt reads. "The friend is your same age."

"The aim of your letter should be to lovingly and compassionately speak truth to the person you're talking to in a way that does not approve of any sin. Instead, TRY TO PERSUADE THEM OF THE GOODNESS OF GOD'S DESIGN for them."

"In at least 8 sentences, try to show the friend from the Bible, reason, and your personal friendship:

  • that God's design for them is good
  • that homosexuality will not bring them satisfaction
  • that you love them even though you don't approve of their lifestyle."

CAL School System Superintendent Darin Long said the assignment was "part of a unit of study which discusses 'What are humans and where is their identity?"

Long said the assignment "in context" was to help students exercise "how a person could discuss homosexuality with a friend from a biblical perspective with compassion and love."

"This hypothetical friend conversation was for our students to review the class discussions and their perspectives on the subject," a statement from Long said. "Moving forward, we will review this assignment to ensure there is clarity in its purpose and language."

I hope the superintendent is saying "we will review this assignment" stuff as a tactical political move, because there is literally nothing wrong with the prompt. It's 100 percent honoring to Christ (and to the hypothetical friend) in its clarity, purpose, and language. It's exactly the kind of "speaking the truth in love" (Eph. 4:13) in which every Christian ought to be trained.

Some folks whined about the assignment.

"I would've hoped that in 20 years maybe they would have learned that love is the way to go, as opposed to the fire-and-brimstone hate," 2002 CAL graduate Kylee Marcy said. "I would like them to issue an apology and change the Christian Worldview class curriculum, and I would like that this specific teacher issue an apology to at least the parents and the students."

"Change the Christian worldview" is a great heretical phrase whenever you hear it.

I'm sorry Marcy, maybe you didn't read the prompt, which tells students to "lovingly and compassionately speak the truth."

JP Davis, a Kentucky-based business owner, said he was sent screenshots of the assignment from a close friend with a child in the class, which he posted to Twitter. He called it "Shameful," adding the hashtag "#stopthehate," so I guess he doesn't want to actually read what the prompt says, either.

"I know it's a Christian school, but that's not my Christianity," Davis said, who is "a gay man," reports Louisville Courier Journal. "That's not my values. And that's not what Jesus, if they want to make that argument, represented. Jesus didn't go around asking people to judge and tell other people how they're wrong and shame."

Davis is right. His values are not Christian or what Jesus represented at all.

Let's take a look at some words from Jesus.

Matthew 7:5 (ESV): "You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye."

Matthew 18:15 (ESV): "If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother.

We could do this all day, but we'll end it with this one from James:

James 5:19โ€“20 (ESV): "My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins."

Let the biblical record show that there ain't nothing hateful or un-Christian about calling your friend to repentance from sin, folks.

It seems the superintendent is standing his ground on this, and you absolutely love to see it.

"We [Christian Academy of Louisville] believe that God created the marriage covenant to be between one man and one woman (Gen. 1:27, Gen. 2:24). We believe that sex is a good gift of God, to be celebrated within the confines of the marriage covenant, agreeing that all other sexual expressions go against God's design. (1 Cor. 6:18, Gal. 5:19)," Long's statement said.

"We believe that all individuals are created in the image of God, and therefore should be treated with compassion, respect, dignity and love at all times even in disagreement."

I couldn't have said it better myself, ladies and gentlemen.
