Be on the lookout for escaped federal prisoner "Fat Leonard"—the U.S. government will give you $40,000 if you help catch him

This case is so embarrassing for the U.S. Marshals that they're willing to shell out 40 large just to get this man back in an ankle bracelet:

The U.S. Marshals Service is offering a $40,000 reward for any information related to "Fat Leonard" aka Leonard Francis, the agency announced Friday night.

Leonard, who was set to be sentenced on Sept. 22 after being found guilty in 2015 for bribing Navy officials with lavish gifts, prostitutes and cash, cut off his ankle monitor last week and has not been seen since. In one instance, according to the Justice Department, Francis was able to have a ship moved to a port he owned in Malaysia.

Oh, you're telling me this $40,000 meal ticket might be out there on open water? Yeah excuse me for a second.

Seriously though, this thing is probably going to be a major scandal for the U.S. government:

From early 2018 until he fled, the judge in the case allowed Francis to live in a private home in San Diego due to his renal cancer; however, under the deal Francis was responsible for paying for 24-hour security at his residence and was required to wear an ankle bracelet.

But that self-funded security detail had its gaps, with the house left unguarded for almost three hours after the guard took a lunch break, according to a court transcript from a Dec. 17, 2020, hearing with Francis.

Yeahhhh I'm pretty sure I know how Fat Leonard got away: Nobody was there guarding him so he just popped out the front door and walked away down the street like it was nothing.

Good luck to the marshals, and congratulations to whoever bags that $40k!
