Mr. President, the Founders didn't create the Second Amendment for hunting animals.
Not only did the major gun control law in the '90s make crime even worse, but this is the same argument Soviet Russia made for its gun control measures in the early 1900s. It was soon nearly impossible for citizens to own anything other than smooth-bore hunting rifles.
Millions were then killed by their own government (or the petty criminals who always ignore the laws).
Our Founders understood what happens when a powerful leader has all the top military resources and tech under his control. That's why they saw fit to allow regular citizens to own cannons and war frigates โ the equivalent of tanks and aircraft carriers today. The fact that we are only limited to semi-automatic weapons and simple body armor bodes badly for future freedom.
The purpose of the Second Amendment is for hunting tyrants, not deer. Change my mind.
- "What country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance. Let them take arms." - Thomas Jefferson to William Stephens Smith, son-in-law of John Adams, 1787
- "I ask who are the militia? They consist now of the whole people, except a few public officers." - George Mason, Address to the Virginia Ratifying Convention, June 4, 1788
- "Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed, as they are in almost every country in Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any band of regular troops." - Noah Webster, 1787
- "The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. A well regulated militia, composed of the body of the people, trained to arms, is the best and most natural defense of a free country." - James Madison, 1789
I'll leave you with the dazzling display of Joe's cognition and thorough understanding of the Constitution.
