Oh look: The "democracy" defenders are trying to undermine democracy again!
On his way out the door, it would appear that Biden wants to make the fundamental reshaping of the structure of the court his legacy. The president is pushing for the imposition of term limits and a code of conduct on the court, because of course he is.
President Biden will call on Congress to impose term limits and a code of conduct on the Supreme Court while also drafting limits on presidential immunity, a White House official said.
Biden will discuss the proposed reforms during remarks on Monday at the LBJ Presidential Library, in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, the official said. Biden also addressed his desire for Supreme Court reform in an op-ed published Monday morning.
(Oh yeah, "he" wrote an op-ed.)
Biden's team wrote an entire opinion piece for the Washington Post detailing his desire to rein in the Court through the legislature and executive branch.
(This, after decades of being told by Democrats that the Supreme Court's rulings on things like abortion were "settled law.")
Here are some of "Biden's" words on the matter.
I served as a U.S. senator for 36 years, including as chairman and ranking member of the Judiciary Committee. I have overseen more Supreme Court nominations as senator, vice president and president than anyone living today. I have great respect for our institutions and the separation of powers.
What is happening now is not normal, and it undermines the public's confidence in the court's decisions, including those impacting personal freedoms. We now stand in a breach.
Nothing says "democracy" like a Democrat trying to destroy our country's system of checks and balances between the three branches of government!!
In the piece, "Biden" calls for a new constitutional amendment called the "No one is above the law" amendment (no joke), because he's mad about Trump's narrow victory on presidential immunity.
"Biden" also calls for term limits to the Court, because he's tired of Clarence Thomas continuing to rack up Ws.
I support a system in which the president would appoint a justice every two years to spend 18 years in active service on the Supreme Court.
If they lose, they change the rules. Simple as.
Here's Biden's final suggested reform.
Third, I'm calling for a binding code of conduct for the Supreme Court. This is common sense. The court's current voluntary ethics code is weak and self-enforced. Justices should be required to disclose gifts, refrain from public political activity and recuse themselves from cases in which they or their spouses have financial or other conflicts of interest. Every other federal judge is bound by an enforceable code of conduct, and there is no reason for the Supreme Court to be exempt.
The media and the Left have been slandering Thomas, Alito, and other conservative judges for years. This is just Joe's lame-duck parting shot.
Don't let the door hit ya on the way out, Mr. President.
