It's strange.
The U.S. government shut down at midnight, but when I woke up, everything was still working as normal. The sun rose in the east and everyone went about their day!
In fact, all seemed right with the world.
Apart from the sun being a little brighter and the air being a little fresher, average Americans haven't yet succumbed to the total apocalypse that is promised us each time the government shuts down.
Essential services, such national security, aren't paused during such shutdowns.
The news about the shutdown gets even better: Republicans are pushing to have their salaries discontinued with no backpay while the government is closed.
Vice President JD Vance commented on the shutdown, saying he doesn't anticipate it will last long before moderate Democrats feel the pressure from increasingly bad optics.
Here's another clip previewing just how bad the optics already are for the Democrats.
Democrats have used Republican-led shutdowns to stir up public anger against the GOP. They now find the roles reversed, and entirely of their own volition.
Troops are indeed without pay; however, the fact that they will receive backpay as soon as the shutdown ends is inconsequential to the wider issue of public perception, which is a politician's most treasured asset.
Republicans have wasted no time trying to shift that perception, and who can blame them? If your opponent hands you a loaded gun...
Enjoy this day without the bureaucrats, America!
But say a prayer for Marco Rubio...
