United Kingdom police reportedly gave this man a fine equivalent to $400 USD and six points on his nonexistent driving license because he didn't provide them proof of insurance for his electric skateboard.

They also impounded his skateboard.

So he's automatically banned from driving for the next few years and they impounded the board until he provides proof of insurance ... but there's no company that will give him insurance. 🥴

The man getting fined in this video doesn't sound British. Is he a tourist? Doubtful, given the discussion of him applying for a driver's license. Is he a migrant who hoped to escape tyrannical rule in his home country?

Per UK law, electric skateboards are motorized vehicles, classified specifically as Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs), and one must have insurance for all motorized vehicles.

Electric skateboard company Base Boards has a whole section about it on their site:

If you're caught on a highway, technically, you're driving an uninsured motor vehicle - you could face a fixed penalty of ÂŁ300 and 6 points on your driving license. If the case goes to court, you could face unlimited fines and disqualification from driving. Your electric skateboard may also be seized by the police.

Even if you do own a compliant model, you'll need to adhere to other laws to use it - taxation, insurance, MOT, driver's license, and helmet.

Americans, separated from British tyranny by that tea party they threw a while back, are generally allowed to ride their electric skateboards wherever in the heck they please.

Except for New York ... and Georgia?
