California's experiment with slap-on-the-wrist penalties for petty crime and drug use has predictably come to an end as everyday citizens watched retailers and their neighbors flee the state.
People were just stretched past their limits. and because of that, Proposition 36 passed.
Here's what Prop 36 introduces:
Felony charges for possessing certain drugs and for thefts under $950, if defendant has two prior drug or theft convictions.
Okay, so it's not perfect. But at least it's not a misdemeanor anymore to steal $950 worth of merchandise.
Criminals get two strikes before they're out. (Why does that sound so familiar?)
Not only did Prop 36 pass, but the Los Angeles, Soros-backed DA, George Gascón, was overwhelmingly defeated by a Republican running as an independent, Nathan Hochman, who got 60% of the vote.
In Los Angeles.
Just let that sink in.
A conservative-leaning DA in Los Angeles got 60% of the vote.
And Hochman ran on this platform:
Los Angeles is a lawless dystopia that needs a heavier hand in the prosecutor's office.
He wasn't kidding.
A couple more years and we would have had to call in Snake Pliskin to contain criminals in LA.
After his win, Hocham said,
Here's what I'm here to tell the police department: Your hands are not tied anymore. The D.A.'s office will not have a political agenda ruling what goes on and what gets prosecuted. We will go back to two things: the facts and the law.
Pro-crime, pro-drug lefties are disheartened by the way things are turning out.
Tinisch Hollins, the executive director of Californians for Safety and Justice, a criminal justice reform organization that opposed Proposition 36, worries that police might actually enforce laws and fill up the prisons again.
I think they may be emboldened in doing their jobs now because of the leadership and rhetoric that will be coming from the White House.
Apparently, she enjoys having to flag down a Walgreens employee to come unlock the toothpaste for her.
But the rest of California is tired of living like they're in a third world country.
