File this under "least surprising things to have happened this month, so far:"
The number of Canadians ending their lives through medically assisted death (MAID) has grown at a speed that outpaces every other nation in the world.
As Canada is poised to expand eligibility criteria under medical assistance in dying (MAID) legislation, data from all 11 countries where the controversial end-of-life treatment exists shows Canada is the fastest-growing adopter in history, an analysis by the Investigative Journalism Bureau and the Toronto Star has found.
This is the end result of the country's move to broaden assisted suicide to include "mentally ill" people.
News flash: This is not a shock: When you expand the criteria for allowing people to kill themselves, more people will kill themselves.
And of course โ of course โ the killing isn't going to stop there:
Dr. Louis Roy, from the Quebec College of Physicians, told the Commons' Special Joint Committee of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) on Friday that his organization believes MAID can be appropriate for infants up to age one who are born with 'severe malformations' and 'grave and severe syndromes' for which their 'prospective of survival is null, so to speak.'
Yeah, um, I don't think we'd call that "medical assistance in dying" at that point. We'd just call it, you know, killing a baby.
Canada's going down a very dark path, and the time to course-correct is vanishingly small.
