Chicago's Lori Lightfoot wants to give poor families $500-a-month universal basic income and I'm sure that will solve the problem of gang violence and drugs on the streets!

The violent city of Chiraq is plagued by more carnage than the dark city of Gotham itself.

Gangs rule the streets, with dozens of people shot every single weekend in the city. A massive number of 793 people have been murdered โ€“ not shot, murdered โ€“ in Chicago over the last 12 months alone.

Despite that, Mayor Lori Lightfoot is set to change the city's descent into bloodbath by doing what leftists do best: throwing money at the problem.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot pitched a pilot program Monday giving $500 monthly payments to 5,000 low-income households, part of the city's proposed $16.7 billion spending plan that relies on an infusion of federal relief funds to close budget gaps for several years.

Lightfoot, a first-term Democrat, characterized the proposed $31.5 million cash assistance program as a way to help "hard-hit, low-income households in need of additional economic stability." The payments would last a year.

Note that this massive spending plan "relies on an infusion of federal relief funds to close budget gaps," which is a fancy way of saying, "The city is so far into debt that it can't waste its own money, so it got the federal government to waste the money of all Americans instead."

The mayor is claiming that this massive spending spree will be the "biggest" of its kind in the country.

Of course, Lightfoot ruffled a few feathers of racist woke people who think only black poor people should be getting money. According to the Chicago Tribune:

City Council Black Caucus Chairman Ald. Jason Ervin previously said it would be a "slap in the face" to proceed with basic income before the city sets up a reparations program for descendants of enslaved people.

You gotta love how the Left eats its own.

Elsewhere, for some odd reason, people thought that giving out $500 a month was a great way to keep people playing video games on their couch instead of seeking gainful employment:

Critics have said such universal basic income programs, which have been championed by some progressives for years, remove the incentive for recipients to seek work, and give people money to spend on vices such as drugs and liquor.

It's a good thing Chicago doesn't have a drug, liquor, or violence problem...

Anyway, I'm sure it will all be fine. Sure, you know some (or a lot) of that money is going to get into the hands of gangs, but leftists keep telling us that you can just give money to criminals (whether in Chicago or in Iran) and they'll learn to be better, more decent human beings.

Also, we know from the 10+ million job openings in the U.S. and the businesses that are closing because they can't find people willing to work, the best way to recover from a government-mandated recession is to empower people to stay home while making it rain that sweet, sweet taxpayer money!
