Twenty-two-year-old archaeology student, Gustav Bruunsgaard, of Aarhus University was using his metal detector near a previous archeological site in Elsted, Denmark, when he uncovered a silver armband dating back to the 8th century.
One armband was a great discovery for the college student, but then a few days later, he returned to the same location and found six more!
The silver jewelry is now on display at the Moesgaard Museum. Archeologists believe they would have been used as a form of currency during the Viking Age. The total weight of Bruunsgaard's findings was more than a pound.
The various armbands display patterns and markings that were common to Russia, Ukraine, and the British Isles, a fact that museum historian, Kasper H. Andersen, says,
... emphasizes that Aarhus was a central hub in the Viking world.
The rare finding is a first for the young archeology student, but it looks like his career is off to a great start.
