South Dakota's a long way away from...well...most things. So you'd be forgiven for having missed the gigantic storm that blew through there a few weeks ago.
But man, was it a doozy:
A storm system with powerful winds produced an unusual blinding wall of dust on Thursday that made it so hard to see that the authorities in Nebraska shut down roads. It then moved through parts of Iowa and South Dakota. ...
Some local news outlets referred to the dust blackout as a "haboob"— a term more commonly used in the Middle East and sometimes a source of irritation for American weather watchers.
Meteorologists said that the wall of dust was technically part of a derecho, which is a powerful wind storm extending more than 240 miles, with a line of quickly-moving thunderstorms.
I don't care what it was called, the thing was an absolute beast. And if you need proof of such, all you gotta see is the copious amounts of insane storm footage that rolled out from the state that day.
I mean just look at it roll in...like some kinda alien mothership or something.
These guys are either very brave or clinically insane, maybe both, who knows.
As one commenter said: "I've never seen anything like it. I've trucked through man storms but this one took the cake."
This fellow writes that he "survived" the derecho, and brother, that's not a bad way to put it:
Just look at how dark it gets in nothing flat:
This is just stunningly beautiful (and terrifying too but oh yeah):
Our man wisely decided to hoof it into the gas station when things got rough:
Nothing like bad weather to make you appreciate a sunny blue sky!
