The BBC has been spiraling the cultural drain for years now, but this latest casting decision has them doubling down on stupid. King and Conqueror, a drama series about the Norman conquest of 1066 AD, will feature non-white actors playing the roles of Anglo Saxons.
Jason Forbes, pictured below, will be playing a fictional character Thane Thomas.
Elander Moore, pictured below, will play the real historical figure of Morcar, who battled against Viking and Norman invaders.
British Historian Dr. Zareer Masani replied this way when asked his opinion on the casting:
Some of us, including people of colour, grew up thinking actors ought to look like characters they played ... [it's] absolutely crazy that they've applied this colour-blindness to a period when Britain was at its least multicultural, before even the Norman Conquest.
Historian Martyn Whittock asked if it would be right for a white person to play a historic African king, and if not, why this scenario is different.
This has been a trend with period dramas lately, which cast non-white actors in the roles of white historical figures, giving the false impression Europe has always been racially diverse.
The Telegraph ran this delightfully hilarious look at what the BBC drama could look like:
It's no wonder BBC ratings for these types of shows are tanking. People want to see real history, not agenda inauthentically shoehorned into a story.
