A California resident has tested positive for the plague.
According to ABC news article, it's the first California plague case in 5 years. El Dorado County health officials were notified by the California Department of Public Health that:
A resident in South Lake Tahoe had tested positive for the plague and that it is thought that person, who is an avid walker, may have been bitten by an infected flea while walking their dog along the Truckee River Corridor, according to a statement released by El Dorado County.
Don't worry, the CDC says that there is now only an average of seven human plague cases per year and the WHO says the mortality rate is estimated to be between 8-10%. If that doesn't make you feel better, maybe this reddit commentary can help ease your worries. Plus, most California residents know it is the public poop you need to worry more about.
