8 killed, 160 kidnapped by Islamic militants who attacked Christian village in Nigeria

Over 50,000 Nigerian Christians have been murdered since 2009.

Open Doors has the latest report on the ongoing slaughter:

Eight people have been killed and around 160 people, mostly Christians, have been kidnapped after Islamic militants attacked a village in Nigeria.

The incident happened on Friday (24 May) when some 300 armed men believed to be from Ansaru (a breakaway faction of Boko Haram) entered the village of Kuchi in Niger state. An Open Doors contact says that it's difficult to verify exact numbers and the names of those kidnapped because many have fled. Most of those taken are reported to be women and children.

The Ansaru group broke away from Boko Haram in January 2012 and "has since targeted civilians, including Westerners, the Nigerian Government and security officials."

Because we so often read these reports without understanding what this violence looks like, here is a video without blood or dead bodies that shows what daily life is like for many in northern Nigeria, including many Muslims.

A spokeswoman for Open Doors said the group was "call[ing] on the international community to do everything in its power to ensure the Nigerian Government faithfully and transparently protects all communities and that the displaced receive the support they need in these circumstances."

As I said, this form of large-scale murder and terror has been going on Nigeria for many years:

[O]ver the past 14 years at least 52,250 Nigerian Christians have been brutally murdered at the hands of Islamist militants, more than 30,000 of whom during the eight-year presidency of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, often criticized during his tenure for not doing enough to combat growing insecurity in the country.

Over the same period, "18,000 Christian churches and 2,200 Christian schools were set ablaze."

It's not like this sort of thing comes in waves and then abates. It's a regular, horrific occurrence there:

Pray for Christians and other innocents in Nigeria. They need it, badly.
