Elon says a human being has been outfitted with a Neuralink implant, which aims to give the disabled a way to interact with the world again

The future, as it happens:

In case it wasn't clear, this is, you know, a modestly big development in technological history:

Placed in the part of the brain that plans movements, the device is designed to interpret a person's neural activity, so they can control external devices such as a smartphone or computer with their thoughts, Neuralink's website says.

Elon's Neuralink has come a long way in just three years!

Recruitment for the procedure began in 2023.

The trials "are open to some individuals who have quadriplegia due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or a spinal cord injury," meaning that well beyond consumer convenience, the device will help those with significant paralysis regain some control of their lives.

Or even more than "some" control. Musk plainly has big ideas for his product:

The first @Neuralink product is called Telepathy. ...

Imagine if Stephen Hawking could communicate faster than a speed typist or auctioneer. That is the goal.

Sounds pretty cool.

At least, until this tech is used to give us all brain chips a few decades from now. The Matrix is gonna be lit!
