On October 21, Conner Smith was taking his son Charlie to a new candy store in Riverside, California, when they found that the store was closed, but had been left unlocked.
Uptown Candy Shop had only been open for about a week, and considering it was in a shopping mall in the greater LA area, there was a real risk of it being looted.

Smith told CBS LA,
My first thought was that somebody is gonna take advantage of the situation, and then what if they want to close because they lose too much inventory and they can't stay open? That would bum my kids out, which would bum me out.
Smith and his son found the phone number for the security company at the mall and waited in front of the candy shop until a guard arrived to lock up.
The grateful store owner, Donia Farraj, shared the security footage of the dad using the unexpected situation as a teaching moment for his son. Farraj told CBS,
We wanted to properly thank them, so we posted it on TikTok to get the word out there. We figured TikTok finds the bad guys really fast, so let's see how long it takes them to find the good guy.
The answer was really fast!
By the next day, Farraj was connected with the Smiths and able to give them some sweet treats as a reward for their help.
