Finance employee tricked into paying $25 million after fraudsters use deepfake technology to pose as CFO during video call

Dude, it's crazy to me that this is a real story. Worst part, the guy who got scammed originally thought it was a scam, but then once everyone's deepfake selves joined the call he thought it was legit, and then he gave away more than $25 million.

Yeah, these deepfakes are getting elaborate. The finance employee, who works for an unnamed multinational firm, not only entered a video call with his deepfake CFO, but with a bunch of other deepfake coworkers as well. Like, a bunch of his peeps were there. These fraudsters are sophisticated, man, and you or I could've easily fallen for this.

A finance worker at a multinational firm was tricked into paying out $25 million to fraudsters using deepfake technology to pose as the company's chief financial officer in a video conference call, according to Hong Kong police.

The elaborate scam saw the worker duped into attending a video call with what he thought were several other members of staff, but all of whom were in fact deepfake recreations, Hong Kong police said at a briefing on Friday …

Believing everyone else on the call was real, the worker agreed to remit a total of $200 million Hong Kong dollars - about $25.6 million.

Can you imagine?

Like, here you were chatting with your CFO, who you assumed was real because he looked real and why would he not be real, and boom, you send $25.6 million to a bunch of scammers. Like, nobody's blaming you for that. You were initially suspicious, but somehow it seemed okay after you literally saw your CFO right there on the screen along with a bunch of your coworkers.

That's crazy. Like, fraud is evolving, and fast.

And it took this dude a long time before he even realized he was scammed. He eventually checked with the head office, and only then did he begin to understand what had happened. The corporation remains unknown, but the scam should forever remain a memory in all of our minds. It's only a matter of time before something like this comes for each and every one of us.

Seriously, these deepfakes are no joke, people, so stay on your toes out there!
