Chicago woman Lynn Andrews was spending the day on the Charles River in Massachusetts when she asked her husband to hold her rings for her while she applied her sunscreen. She placed the rings in his shirt pocket (he said this was a bad idea) and forgot to put them back on.
After a while, her husband decided to go for a swim and took his shirt off, and when he did, Lynn's diamond ring flew overboard and sunk to the bottom.
Lucky for Andrews, the Cambridge Fire Department's Dive Team and Marine Unit were working a detail on the Charles River that day. Talk about being in the right place at the right time. The dive team quickly went to work to find the ring, and within about 5 minutes, the ring was safely returned to its owner.
I don't know a lot about diamonds, but I do know that that one is not the kind you want to lose at the bottom of the Charles River.
Cambridge Fire Lt. Stephen Capuccio said in a statement,
This is an amazing example of using our training for public service and a terrific opportunity for the Dive Team and Marine Unit members to practice working together.
The Andrews were very grateful that they were the beneficiaries of the dive team's impromptu "practice" session and have reached out to express their thanks.
