To celebrate the iconic 23 flavors of Dr Pepper and the start of football season, Krispy Kreme released The Krispy Kreme x Dr Pepper Kickoff Collection of donuts on August 23.

In my extensive research for this article, I happened to see that Krispy Kreme is offering free delivery to go along with this launch, and as I was not committed enough to actually leave my house for this taste test, I thought that was a brilliant marketing move on their part, and my Dr Pepper themed fleet of donuts arrived on my doorstep within half an hour.

The GrubHub worker was even kind enough to read the note not to ring my doorbell and wake napping children, for which I am exceedingly grateful.

First impression: The glossy marketing photos definitely look much better than the real thing. But all in all, my expectations are pretty low for minimum-wage donut shop workers' artistic abilities, so I won't totally count this against them.

The only component that is actually Dr Pepper flavored is the frosting on this donut:

As you can see, the squiggle of frosting on here is minuscule compared to the advertisement, but it did surprisingly pack in a lot of the signature Dr Pepper flavor. Maybe not all 23 flavors, but it definitely wasn't bad.

I'm typically a Krispy Kreme purist, so eating a cold donut with a minor amount of frosting was not comparable to eating a hot original glazed donut, but once again, it was pretty good.

The other two donuts are really just regular donuts with amateur football decorations, but they round out the collection nicely. The football-shaped donut is a standard creme-filled donut, which is really the best after a hot glazed donut anyway. The goalpost donut is just a colorful icing and sprinkle donut, which is probably my #3 choice.

All in all, the collection was a good basic mix of the usual donuts you'd get from Krispy Kreme, so if you like those, the tiny bit of Dr Pepper-flavored frosting really does nothing to change the lineup, besides adding a little novelty to your life.

The most groundbreaking thing I discovered in this process is the Original Glazed flavored iced latte, which I only added to the order because I felt strange ordering free delivery for only 3 donuts.

This was a great impulse decision and something I would buy again.
