Mia Love, the first black Republican congresswoman, has passed away at age 49 after a three-year battle with brain cancer.

On March 1, Love's daughter said that Love's treatment was no longer working and she was being moved to palliative care.

The daughter of Catholic Haitian immigrants who moved to Brooklyn, Love moved to Saratoga Springs, Utah, in 1998 after converting to Mormonism and won a seat on the city council in 2003. She served as mayor of the city from 2010-2014 before winning a race for U.S. Congress.

Love served two terms in Congress from 2015 to 2018. After losing her bid for a third term, she worked as a Republican commentator at CNN and on ABC's "The View."

Love was also appointed a fellow of the institute of politics and public service at Georgetown University in 2020. She was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a type of brain cancer, in February 2022.

The former congresswoman is survived by her husband, Jason, and their three children.
