French man demands to split $500,000 lottery jackpot that thieves won with his credit card

Nobody wants to be the victim of identity theft. But one Frenchman is willing to tolerate it just this once if it means he'll get a cut of the lottery jackpot:

A man whose credit card was stolen and used to buy a €500,000 (£414,000) winning lottery scratchcard in France has appealed to the thieves to come forward so they can split the prize.

The winning ticket, purchased in Toulouse, has yet to be submitted for collection.

You gotta love the dichotomy at play here. On the one hand, those crooks are probably hunkered down with their $500,000 ticket like:

...and meanwhile the credit card owner is like:

The victim "had his backpack and bank card stolen from his car earlier this month." He had the bank block the card, but before they could get to it, the thieves used it at a convenience store to buy the ticket.

The card owner "has filed a police complaint but is willing to withdraw it if the thieves come forward to share the winnings."

Of course, that all depends on whether or not the cops will let it happen. Prosecutors "may attempt to seize the winnings, arguing they were obtained illegally."

Not sure what I'd do if I were the thieves here. Then again, I wouldn't have been a thief in the first place!
