In a rare win for Canada, this transgender woman lost his appeal to have the Ontario government pay for him to look more like a woman.
There is a publication ban on the case, so the media has been referring to this guy as M.F. Last September, M.F.'s insurance request for coverage of his tracheal shave (to reduce his Adam's apple) and brow reduction surgery was denied. He appealed that decision but just lost the appeal as well.
M.F. argued that he could have requested insurance coverage for genital surgery, but instead, he is only asking for "facial feminization" surgery, which would cost $15,000 to $30,000 less than the genital surgery.
Oh, how generous and selfless of him ...
M.F. and other woke, trans allies are criticizing the decision, of course. They say that the province should cover these types of gender-affirming surgeries. According to M.F., his gender dysphoria is getting worse as he gets older; he "hates being visibly transgender" and that these surgeries are necessary to cure his dysphoria.
Founder of the Canadian Gender Report, Pamela Buffone, says the government needs to draw the lines somewhere.
Why should this quickly growing identity group be entitled to services that others are not.
The Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) is only meant to cover "medically necessary" surgeries, but that even includes gender reassignment.
Last year, an appeal board ruled that Ontario should cover surgery for a non-binary person who doesn't fully identify as male or female. The procedure, called a "penile sparing vaginoplasty," creates a vaginal opening while keeping the penis intact and can cost over $70,000.
Does that sound "medically necessary?"
The question for our health-care system is, what is medically necessary and which procedures should be publicly funded. There are cancer patients who are left disfigured and distressed but who are not entitled to publicly funded facial surgeries or minor cosmetic procedures to reconstruct their appearance.
What (M.F.) is requesting is for our health-care system to give special status to people who identify with this amorphous group called βtrans' and cater to any and every whim they have.
Where do we draw the line?
Although Ontario finally put its foot down and won't be paying for his dude's facial feminization surgery, Yukon and Prince Edward Island are the two provinces that cover this type of surgery.
In 2021, Manitoba also gave in and paid for a transgender person's facial surgery after they won their appeal.
But hey! It's a desperate time in Canada, so I have no choice but to consider this case a "win." π
It is Canada though, so M.F. should be happy that he wasn't offered Canada's normally preferred treatment for unhappy patients:
