Happy news! The most premature baby ever to survive just celebrated his first birthday!
· Jun 21, 2021 · NottheBee.com

With a due date of October 13, 2020, Richard Scott William Hutchinson arrived just a little bit early, being born on June 5, 2020, at only 21 weeks 2 days gestation. That's barely more than half of the typical gestation time, in case you were wondering. He was born weighing only 11.9oz.

Baby Richard was given a 0% chance of surviving, since no babies born that early have ever survived. But he just demolished those odds when he celebrated his first birthday (and won a world record in the process!).

Richard spent the first six months of his life in the NICU at Children's Minnesota hospital, and thanks to the medical team there along with the dedication of his parents, he was able to go home in December of 2020. According to one of Richard's doctors, Dr. Kern of Children's Minnesota,

"Rick and Beth fought for Richard day after day and never stopped advocating for their baby through it all. Their strength and ability to stay positive and hopeful even during the most stressful and difficult times was inspiring.

I think Richard's story has inspired so many people around the world and I think we will all continue to learn from him. Thank you, Richard, Beth and Rick for all you have taught us. We can't wait to see what the future holds for you."

Happy birthday Richard!
