Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has no interest in Ukraine joining NATO

Feb 12, 2025

It's clear that the Trump presidency is taking a dramatically different stance on the world stage than the previous White House.

Trump is working to end the forever wars, and his Defense Secretary is making it clear that we have no interest in putting Ukraine and Russia in a position to drag us into another conflict down the road.

Give a listen to what Pete Hegseth had to say at a Nato meeting in Belgium today:

The United States does not believe that NATO membership for Ukraine is a realistic outcome for a negotiated settlement. Instead any security guarantee must be backed by capable European and non-European troops ... they should be deployed as NOT part of a NATO mission and not part of Article 5.

Article 5 is the famous "an attack on one is an attack on all" clause of the NATO agreement. Including Ukraine as a NATO member would guarantee that the United States and other countries would have to respond with a declaration of war against whoever attacks Ukraine.

The Trump White House is not interested in committing American troops to fight a war in Ukraine.

Hegseth had more to say to NATO:

It's clear we are taking back charge of America's destiny and not leaving it in the hands of NATO or the EU.
