The global megachurch has officially asked the Australian government for permission to build a billion-dollar housing development project.

For realsies!

Because what every church needs is a billion-dollar housing development.

According to Protestia, the monstrous church, known for its music, is now diversifying into real estate:

The church has submitted plans to the New South Wales state government for a large-scale mixed-use precinct. The proposal would include:

  • 170,000 sqf of publicly accessible open space

  • 915 dwellings (residential units/apartments)

  • Commercial and mixed-use buildings

Notably, it would also include the preservation of the existing Hillsong Convention Center on the property.

Yeah, you've gotta keep the Hillsong Convention Center, obviously.

A Hillsong spokesperson provided a statement on the $1.07 billion project:

'Like many organizations, Hillsong Church is exploring future options and approvals to ensure our property is stewarded responsibly for the long-term mission of the church and the benefit of the wider community. Should any plans be finalized in the future, we will communicate clearly with our church community.

Any proposed plans being explored prioritize the continued servicing of church life, including weekend services and weekday ministries, and are designed not to impact but to enhance our ability to meet the needs of the local community.'

Before I go, zero in on this note:

Unless the project is a joint venture, Hillsong Church would put nearly all its assets on the line as security for the loan.

Hoo boy!

Anyway, judging by Hillsong's worship music, one can assume all of the housing units will be exactly the same and bereft of any variety whatsoever. 😉
