And a 5, 6, 7, 8!
Hundreds of young dancers in white tutus showed off their fancy footwork at the Plaza Hotel in New York this week. Their goal was to set a new world record for the most ballerinas dancing on tiptoe in one place - and they did it!
They've beaten the old record of 306 with a whopping 353 ballerinas on pointe!
Tina Shi, an adjudicator for Guinness World Records, announced the results: "353, that is a new Guinness world record! Congratulations!"
The group consisted of dancers between the ages of 9 and 19, many of whom are seeking scholarships, and some seasoned pros who've strutted their stuff on this stage before.
To the tunes of Tchaikovsky, these ballerinas did the bourrée, a fancy move where they hop from one tiptoe to the other for a solid minute.
The whole shebang was put together by Youth America Grand Prix, a ballet scholarship gig that's marking its 25th birthday by hosting three nights of performances at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. This New York-based Youth America Grand Prix crew has been running the biggest student ballet showdown since '99.
As a former professional dancer, I have to admire these girls and their killer footwork!
These are the things that make people (or at least me) smile. In the grand scheme of things, it may seem like a small feat (no pun intended), but all 353 of these young girls will remember this forever.
Way to go, girls!
