You might find this hard to believe, but just under 700 pennies were sold at auction last week and they went for a whopping $16.76 million.
They were sold in sets of three, the final set to ever be minted going for $800,000!!
The final pennies were minted in mid-November.
You might have recently seen signs like these at your local grocer or convenience store:
Yes, the penny is no longer being minted, which means a bunch of peeps got together and bought up the final 696 pennies for $16.76 million dollars.
Here's my two cents: These pennies, especially the final set, should appreciate in value over the years. So while initially it looks very dumb that three pennies sold for $800,000, it might not look like such a strange decision when they fetch millions a few decades down the road. But then, of course, we'll have to talk about the guy who bought three pennies for $4 million, and the argument starts all over again.
