The Old Orchard Beach Police Department made a big deal swearing in Jamaican Officer Jon Luke Evans last June, and it would have been a great, feel-good story if Evans were a legal immigrant that had become a citizen.

Nope, Evans is an illegal immigrant. He doesn't have approval for working in the U.S. (let alone as a POLICE OFFICER), and he definitely doesn't have approval to have a firearm, issued or purchased.

Is hiring foreigners who illegally entered our country the only way blue states like Maine can get police officers these days??

ICE Boston Field Office Director Patricia Hyde said in a statement.

The fact that a police department would hire an illegal alien and unlawfully issue him a firearm while on duty would be comic if it weren't so tragic.

We have a police department that was knowingly breaking the very law they are charged with enforcing in order to employ an illegal alien. ICE Boston will continue to prioritize public safety by arresting and removing criminal alien threats from our New England communities.

This guy was so happy to have a gun!

The firearm issue is what ultimately got Evans arrested by Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE).

He filled out a firearm background check to purchase a gun and got flagged by the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms Agency (ATF).

Old Orchard Beach Police Chief Elise Chard issued a statement on Facebook, however, claiming that they didn't know the guy was illegal:

As part of the hiring process, the town reviewed multiple forms of identification, including photo identification, and submitted Evans' I-9 form to the Department of Homeland Security's E-Verify program. The Department of Homeland security then verified that Evans was authorized to work in the U.S. The form was submitted and approved by DHS on May 12, 2025.

In hiring Evans, our department and our community relied on the Department of Homeland Security's E-Verify program to ensure we were meeting our obligations, and we are distressed and deeply concerned about this apparent error on the part of the federal government.

So the only background check the police use is E-Verify?

The system that illegal immigrants scam all the time?

I bet the folks in Maine feel all kinds of safe right now.
