What is a fish doorbell?
Well, let this lady explain:
Here's what the fish doorbell (vis deurbel) website looks like:
You can alert the lock keeper to open up the gate for fish by clicking the doorbell to the right, otherwise it remains locked. These fish are from Utrecht, by the way, which is about 30 miles south of Amsterdam.
This evening at 6:06 local time, a fish appeared on the livestream.
Here's some info on the canal lock from the website:
In the heart of the city lies the beautiful Weerdsluis, a manually operated lock. When the lock gates are closed, fish are forced to wait, wasting valuable time and energy - making them easy prey for birds and predatory fish.
To help the fish, an underwater camera is installed at the lock. If fish appear on screen, you can press the doorbell! This alerts the lock keeper, who will open the lock when many fish are waiting.
The doorbell operates during spawning season, early March to late May.
Last year, I kid you not, the vis deurbel website attracted "around 2.7 million visitors worldwide."
So go on, get out there and save some fish!
