I know one of you is rolling up your sleeves in your parents' basement right now, about to point out with your never-fired-a-gun fingers that it's the government handing out weapons here and so there's no comparison to private gun ownership.
Let me ask what's better: A bunch of untrained civilians holding government rifles they've never fired while they face death, or a well-trained, well-equipped civilian militia that's been privately training with modern [read: effective] weapons to defend hearth and home their whole lives?
The main focus of the 2A is to equip the entire populace with the training and weaponry needed to defend the nation from invading armies – whether they be those of a foreign king or a despotic tyrant at home.
