Maine lobsterman Captain Cameron Pease caught himself a live military rocket 20 miles off the coast of Maine.
As Pease was pulling in his traps, he noticed that there was a hunk of metal tangled up in them. It was so large that the boat listed to one side, but as they headed back to shore, part of the object broke off, and the boat righted itself.
When they finally got the traps aboard, Pease found that he had a large cylindrical something.
"I had no clue [what it was]," Pease said. "It was covered in mud from the ocean floor."
After cleaning it up a bit, he realized the hunk of metal was a 150 pound missile: A 1940s MK29 Mod-0 used for sea-based attacks to be precise.
Upon that realization, he threw it in the back of his truck and went to run errands (because of course).
At some point the next day, he notified the police of his find, and they sent out the bomb squad to examine the missile. An X-ray showed that the missile tip still had three to five pounds of very active explosive in it.
Pease was lucky he hadn't blown himself to kingdom come.
Under the guidance of a Navy EOD Mobile Unit, the missile was safely detonated with dynamite.
There's no word on what the lobsters were plotting to do with that missile, but we'll keep you updated if their clawful plans ever surface.
