It's starting to feel like the longer the Cuban immigrants have been out of Cuba, the easier it is to forget why they fled Marxism.
1998 was the last time that Miami elected a Democrat to office, as the city's Cuban population has traditionally (and even still) pushed hard right.
Unfortunately, times have changed.
Mayor-elect Eileen Higgins, born in Ohio, moved to Miami two decades ago and has been a staunch leftwing activist in the community ever since. She worked as the Peace Corps country director for Belize and as a foreign service officer with the U.S. Department of State. Her platform has focused on "affordable" (read: socialist) housing, expanding public transit, and climate change (because of course).

'Tonight's victory shows that the pendulum is swinging in our favor and that when we commit to relentless, year-round organizing and invest in a long-term strategic field program, we can, in fact, win,' FDP Chair Nikki Fried said in a statement Tuesday night.
Lots of people responded to the result with a warning for Republicans as midterms loom on the horizon.
