An Ohio man sought in connection with the killing of a 77-year-old woman ended up with gunshot wounds after breaking into a Georgia home on Thursday.

According to the Fayette County Sheriff's Office (FCSO), Michael James Brooks II, a resident of Columbus, Ohio, is still hospitalized due to injuries sustained during the home intrusion.

Once he is released from the hospital, he will be confronted with charges including burglary, home invasion, and theft by receiving in Georgia, as well as murder charges in Ohio.

Here's what happened:

Around 2 a.m. on Thursday, the home security alarm went off, and police were notified of a burglary - they got to the home in less than three minutes.

That was just enough time for the homeowner to find and stop the intruder (who was carrying a knife) in the basement, warn him that he would shoot, and then, well ... ultimately shoot the punk.

Police told FOX 5 Atlanta that the homeowner then left the basement and positioned himself defensively on the second-floor staircase to protect his family.

"There, he took his stand as the subject made his way up to the second floor. [He] made the comment, something to the effect of, ‘You're going to have to kill me,' when the resident fired a second shot. That was about the time the deputies got there. From we can tell, he was coming down the stairway with a second gunshot wound," said Fayette County Sheriff Barry Babb. "At that point, they actually still struggled with him [as they] took him into custody."

The family was safe, and Brooks was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with two gunshot wounds.

Authorities stated that Brooks has an extensive criminal record.

He is wanted for his alleged involvement in the fatal stabbing of Emily Foster, which transpired on September 9, in Columbus, Ohio (the city's University District), during another home invasion. He is also linked to the carjacking of a red Ford F-150 truck in Kettering, Ohio, just a few days earlier.

This guy is a real piece of work.

Columbus law enforcement is currently seeking information on how Brooks arrived in the University District. They have released photographs of Brooks, without pants, cycling through the vicinity following the fatal stabbing of Emily Foster.

Police say his attacks are random.

According to Fox News:

Columbus police said that Brooks had been released from the Franklin County Jail the night before he committed the murder. He had pleaded guilty to two counts of felony fleeing on aggravated assault charges in an unrelated case. Police said he had been released before sentencing in that case.

Ah, so he murdered a woman and nearly murdered others because he wasn't kept in jail where he belonged.

The absolute state of our "justice" system.

FOX 5 reported that Brooks has served time for aggravated robbery, robbery and receiving stolen property, having been released in 2016, according to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections. He was on parole until June of this year, the outlet reported.

Thank God the good guy was home with his family, and even better - he was armed and ready to protect them.
