For many years, even those with little interest in space matters have known of the Hubble Space Telescope, which has allowed astronomers to see unthinkable distances across the cosmos, providing a glimpse at some of the oldest and most distant galaxies in the universe.
Well, this week space exploration is getting an update:
As big as a tennis court and 100 times as powerful as the Hubble Space Telescope, the James Webb Space Telescope will reveal the outer reaches of the universe in more detail than ever before. Webb could "open a new eye to the cosmos," said Dr. Rogier Windhorst, regents' professor at Arizona State University and a James Webb interdisciplinary scientist since 2002.
Webb's imaging capabilities are expected to be orders of magnitude greater than Hubble's:
Hubble sees in the 90- to 2,500-nanometer range, while Webb will see an even wider range of light wavelengths—from 600 to 28,500 nanometers.
The universe is a very big place, and...
