You'll never win if you don't try.

And even if you win, if you try too late, you might still lose. That's what a New Jersey man has found out after trying to cash in on $59,000 in chips from a casino that went out of business … in 1984.

According to reports, Keith Hawkins attempted to cash the chips from the long-defunct Playboy Hotel and Casino through the Treasury Department's Unclaimed Property Administration. Unfortunately for Mr. Hawkins, an appellate panel determined that the chips were taken from the casino decades earlier by unauthorized means.

From the Associated Press:

The man told the UPA he had bought the chips — which were worth $59,500 — at an online auction and did not know their source. New Jersey State Police eventually determined that the casino had hired a company that was supposed to destroy the chips after it closed, but a former employee of that company 'had pilfered several boxes of unused chips' sometime around 1990 and put them in a bank deposit box, the appellate panel noted.

Hawkins now finds himself out of luck and left with having to earn his casino winnings the old-fashioned way — counting cards like everyone else.

Don't worry, Keith, there's bound to be an underground poker game run by the Russian mob going on somewhere. Better try your luck there!
