Pastor Steven Furtick of Elevation Church in Charlotte, North Carolina (where a bunch of songs you sing in church these days come from), recently compared the crucifixion of Jesus to Billboard removing Lil Nas X's song "Old Town Road" from its country music charts.
"You're attracted to something that's different," Furtick said. "You're drawn to what's different."
"Not at first. First, you fear it. That's why they had to take 'Old Town Road' off the Billboard charts on country music because it was too different. They couldn't find a category for it. And they said, 'It's not country enough, but it's not rap enough, and we don't know what it is. It's different.' That's why they crucified Jesus."
Although the comparison is historically and theologically ridiculous, Furtick and the folks in attendance sure seem proud of it.
At least it's not the most insane thing Furtick has ever said.
Stillβ¦
"You know you don't have many preachers that can put Lil Nas X and Jesus in the same paragraph," Furtick said.
I certainly hope so...
