Oh look you guys, the city of Philadelphia is virtue signaling again.
Yes, every Friday in December is Shop Black Business Friday, as if when you go last-minute Christmas shopping your priority will be first finding a black-owned business and then finding a gift.
Philadelphia City Council is set to hear a resolution declaring each Friday in December "Shop Black Business Friday."
Councilmember Katherine Gilmore Richardson plans to reintroduce the resolution Thursday to give businesses more support.
The resolution, which has passed each year since 2020, aims to encourage shoppers to support Black-owned businesses in the city.
I get the idea, I really do, but the whole "support black businesses" thing just seems borderline racist in itself. Like, imagine if in my city I passed a resolution calling for everyone to shop white businesses on Fridays in December. That would be 100% racist, am I right? But for some reason when you do this for black businesses it's not.
And look how awkward it looks live on the news:
It's like we're babying the black community. Like they're our pets or something. So weird.
Look, I'm all for supporting black-owned businesses simply based on their products. Some of the best restaurants in town here are black-owned. But to openly call for people to shop at black businesses simply because they're run by black people โ that just seems ungenuine to the core.
