Alexei Zhuravlev, a member of Russia's parliament, said on state TV that Russia has the capability to retaliate against the United States for supporting the Ukrainians, and that President Vladimir Putin could wipe out the East and West coasts with just four Sarmat-2 missiles, affectionately referred to as "Satan"-2 missiles by NATO countries.
"I will tell you absolutely competently that to destroy the entire the East Coast of the United States, two Sarmat missiles are needed,
"And the same goes for the West Coast," Zhuravlev continued. "Four missiles, and there will be nothing left."
Zhuravlev said the mushroom clouds would be visible from Mexico. He also added that no one in Russia should have a false sense of security when it comes to nuclear war.
"No one will be fine, but you have to calculate correctly," he said.
Dmitry Rogozin, head of Russian space agency Roscosmos, said that Russia's arsenal will soon have 50 Sarmat-2 missiles.
The Sarmat-2 missiles are roughly 14 stories tall, weigh 220 tons, are equipped with hypersonic glide vehicles, and can reach any point on Earth. Russia calls the Sarmat-2 the most powerful nuclear missile in the world, though very little is known about its true capabilities.
Zhuravlev went on to claim that the United States should be the target of the new missiles because it has been aiding Ukrainian Nazis. He then suggested that 2 million people in Ukraine were Nazis, roughly 5 percent of the Ukraine's population.
"These 2 million people either should have left Ukraine, or they should be denazified, in other words, destroyed. No more than that," the member of Parliament proclaimed on live TV.
Putin's government holds that the war in Ukraine is a civil war because Ukraine is viewed as being Russian, not an independent nation, and that its invasion is just a military operation by the Kremlin in its own territory, and that NATO is the cause of Russians fighting Russians.
Several other members of President Vladmir Putin's inner circle have gone on television issuing similar threats of nuclear destruction against Britain and other NATO nations since the war in Ukraine began.
